Program Overview

The Utility Tree Trimmer Training Program at Kapawe’no College is designed to meet Alberta's trades standards and equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required for a successful career in utility vegetation management. This comprehensive program combines theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on experience, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to safely and efficiently manage vegetation around utility lines. Participants will learn to adhere to Alberta's regulations while mastering the techniques necessary for effective tree trimming and vegetation control.

Course Modules Outline

Introduction to Utility Vegetation Management

  • Overview of utility tree trimming and its significance.
  • Understanding the importance of effective vegetation management.

Safety and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Identification and proper use of PPE.
  • Implementation of safety protocols and best practices in Alberta.
  • Emergency response training and first aid specific to utility work.

Tree Biology and Identification

  • Basics of tree biology, growth patterns, and health assessment.
  • Identifying Alberta-specific tree species and understanding their ecological importance.
  • Assessing tree health and potential hazards in utility management.

Pruning and Trimming Techniques

  • Principles of pruning for healthy tree growth.
  • Techniques for trimming around utility lines while minimizing risk.
  • Use of hand tools and power equipment in adherence to Alberta standards.

Climbing and Rigging

Electrical Hazard Awareness

Evaluation, Certification, and Employment Opportunities

  • All 17 weeks of “Hard Skills” (hands-on training) will be complemented with a 35-week “Soft Skills” (academic learning) tailored to each participant’s educational goals, needs, and personal desires.
