Program Overview

The Landscaping Assistant Program at Kapawe’no College is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the landscaping industry. This program focuses on landscape design, installation, and maintenance techniques, including plant identification, hardscape construction, irrigation systems, and sustainable landscaping practices. Participants will receive hands-on training in skid steer operations, enhancing their ability to manage various landscaping tasks effectively and safely.

Course Modules Outline

Introduction to Landscape Labor with Skid Steer Operations

  • Overview of roles and responsibilities of a landscape laborer with skid steer training.
  • Understanding the significance of skid steer operation in landscape work.

 

Basic Plant and Landscape Understanding

  • Introduction to common plants and landscaping features encountered in the field.
  • Understanding basic landscape design principles.

 

Skid Steer Operation Basics

  • Skid steer components, controls, and safety procedures.
  • Introduction to basic skid steer maneuvering and operations.

 

Equipment and Tools in Landscape Work

  • Identification and use of common landscape tools and equipment.
  • Safety practices and maintenance procedures for landscape tools.

 

Site Preparation and Safety

  • Preparing sites for landscaping projects utilizing skid steer machinery.
  • Understanding and implementing safety protocols on landscaping job sites.

 

Grading and Excavation Techniques

  • Techniques for grading and excavation work using a skid steer.

Evaluation, Certification, and Employment Opportunities

  • All 17 weeks of “Hard Skills” (hands-on training) will be complemented with a 35-week “Soft Skills” (academic learning) designed specifically for each participant’s educational goals, needs, and personal desires.
