Program Overview

The Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) program at Kapawe’no College is designed to provide participants with essential skills and knowledge in the field of horizontal directional drilling. This intensive training course covers the fundamentals of drilling, including techniques, equipment operation, safety protocols, and industry standards. Students will gain practical experience that prepares them for various roles in the HDD industry, ensuring they are equipped to meet the demands of this growing field.

Course Modules Outline

Overview of Different HDD Configurations

  • Introduction to various horizontal directional drilling (HDD) configurations, their structures, and respective uses.
  • Detailed sessions on tandem setups with distinct specifications.

 

Basic Vehicle Mechanics

  • Basic understanding of vehicle mechanics to promote technical insight.
  • Lessons covering the functionality of the engine, transmission, axles, hydraulic systems, suspension systems, differentials, and brakes.

 

Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance

  • Emphasis on the importance of pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Training on how to properly check fluid levels, tire conditions, brakes, lights, belts, and hoses.
  • Imparting basic vehicle maintenance skills to troubleshoot minor issues on the job.

 

Safety & Compliance

  • Training on adhering to safety procedures and relevant regulations in HDD operations.
  • Emphasis on wearing seatbelts, ensuring load limitations are not exceeded, understanding road weight capacity, and getting familiar with relevant traffic laws.

 

Loading & Unloading Procedures

  • Instructions on correct loading techniques, emphasizing keeping the HDD equipment balanced when loading and managing the center of gravity.
  • Detailed lessons on how to properly unload materials in various conditions safely.

 

Driving Techniques & Route Planning

  • Behind-the-wheel training to understand HDD equipment handling in diverse working conditions.

 

Final Assessment and Certification

  • All 17 weeks of “Hard Skills” (hands-on training) will be complemented with a 35-week “Soft Skills” (academic learning) designed specifically for each participant’s educational goals, needs, and personal desires.
