The Carpenter Assistant Program at Kapawe’no College is designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in carpentry. This comprehensive program combines hands-on practice with theoretical instruction, ensuring trainees develop a solid foundation in carpentry techniques, safety regulations, and industry standards. From reading blueprints to mastering tool usage, our program prepares graduates for entry-level positions and further career advancement in the construction industry.

Course Modules Outline

  • Introduction to Carpentry

    • Definition and responsibilities of a Carpenter.
    • Overview of construction materials, focusing on types of wood and their properties.

  • Basic Woodworking Techniques

    • Introduction to essential woodworking techniques: measuring, cutting, joining, and finishing.
    • Knowledge of woodworking hand tools and their usage.

  • Safety Practices

    • Importance of safety practices: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and emergency procedures.
    • Safe operation of basic power tools and machinery.

  • Basic Building Techniques

    • Introduction to framing techniques for construction.
    • Practical experience in building simple structures, such as workbenches or small furniture items.

  • Advanced Building Techniques

    • Focus on constructing more complex structures like storage units or shelves.
    • Selection of appropriate fastening techniques and hardware.

  • Reading Blueprints and Plans

    • Understanding and interpreting construction blueprints and plans.
    • Basics of scale modeling and drafting.

  • Use of Power Tools and Machinery

    • Identification and proper use of power tools and larger woodworking machinery.
    • Maintenance, troubleshooting, and storage of carpentry tools and equipment.

  • Practical Training

    • Hands-on workshop practice under supervision.
    • Practical experience in measuring, cutting, joining, and finishing tasks.

  • Evaluation, Certification, and Employment Pathways

    • All 17 weeks of “Hard Skills” (hands-on training) complemented with a 35-week “Soft Skills” (academic learning) program tailored to each participant’s educational goals, needs, and personal desires.
